Nykyaikaisessa vieraiden kielten opetuksessa on tavoitteena helposti ymmärrettävä puhe. Tämä tavoite on kielenopetukselle yhteinen päämäärä oppijoiden iästä tai taitotasosta riippumatta, ja se kulkee täten oppijoiden mukana halki elinikäisen kielenoppimisen. This article examines the role of pupils’ L1 in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and summarises a part of a two-phased mixed methods research. In the qualitative phase, three CLIL teachers were interviewed and their CLIL lessons were observed. In the quantitative phase, a survey was formed based on the results emerging from the qualitative phase which was answered by 44 CLIL teachers in Finland. The results showed that language is an important factor in the differentiation of CLIL education. Varhaisessa CLIL-opetuksessa olevien oppilaiden käsityksiä kielitaidosta ja vieraan kielen käytöstä

Tässä artikkelissa paneudutaan varhain alkaneessa CLIL-opetuksessa opiskelleiden oppilaiden käsityksiin kielitaidosta. Tutkimukseen osallistuneet oppilaat (N=41) opiskelivat englannin- ja ranskankielisessä CLIL-opetuksessa 2. vuosiluokalla. Tutkimuksemme aineistona olivat oppilaiden piirtämät kuvat tilanteista, joissa he kertoivat tarvittavan tai käytettävän vierasta kieltä. Lisäksi oppilaat saivat selittää kuviaan kirjallisesti kolmen lisäkysymyksen avulla. Aineisto analysoitiin visuaalisen analyysin ja sisällönanalyysin keinoin. This article discusses the significance of CLIL education from the students’ perspective. Two former CLIL students, who received extensive English CLIL education in primary school in 1990s, were interviewed during the summer 2016. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the memories they had of CLIL and how they perceived its influence on their life courses. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis with a theory-oriented framework. The present study investigates differentiation in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Finland. Specifically, this combination of a qualitative case study and quantitative survey examines (1) primary teachers’ perceptions of differentiation, (2) the differentiation methods specific to CLIL education the teachers use and (3) the challenges of differentiation they identify. CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) has been claimed to create a positive attitude towards languages and language learning in general and to raise intercultural awareness. The studies on the topics have however remained scarce. This study examines the issue from former pupils’ perspective. The 24 participants, who received English-medium CLIL during their comprehensive school in the 1990s, were interviewed in-depth and the data were analysed qualitatively.
